Ghost King’s Sacrificial Little Bride (1)

The cold wind howled.

Bai Weiwei was extremely exhausted. She vaguely raised her hand and saw the delicate, red embroidered sleeves.

She had been to many ancient planes, and at first glance, she could see that this was an ancient wedding dress.

Another ancient plane?

System: “You okay?”

Bai Weiwei was startled. The system would ask if she was okay?

She hurriedly replied, “You aren’t going to make a large purchase with my life value, are you?”

System: “Am I so unbearable in your heart?”

Bai Weiwei: “No, you’re much more unbearable than that. Do you want me to record and publish your evil deeds on posters1?”

System: “Roll.”

【The mission is to obtain Ji Yongchuan’s love. Target: Ji Yongchuan. Completion: 0. Duration: 1 month.】

One month?

Bai Weiwei: “That time limit is too short.”

System: “In the last plane, you expediently completed a sixteen month mission in three months. The main system thought that you were just a busy little bee, so it shortened the mission duration to let you keep flying.”

What ghost was a busy little bee?

And what does it mean, keep flying?

Bai Weiwei had a “nothing left to live for” face, “The memory hasn’t been sent yet.”

System: “I’ll transmit it when you’re not afraid.”

Bai Weiwei wondered, what should she fear?

She had gone through great winds and waves. Women as powerful and beautiful as her only appeared in legends.

How could she be scared?

Suddenly an ominous chill closed in, and a foul, rancid odor permeated the air.

A shrill creaking noise sounded.

Similar to someone scraping their nails against a chalkboard.

Bai Weiwei only just realized she was lying down. Beneath her were hard wooden boards, and overhead was wretched green2 moonlight.

This year, even the moon was so malnourished its face was green.

Bai Weiwei was silent for a long time before she asked, “Where am I?”

System: “Cemetery.”

Bai Weiwei: “Where am I laying?”

System: “Coffin.”

Bai Weiwei stiffened, her heart jumped wildly, and she broke out in goosebumps.

She shakily said, “The one who is scratching the coffin boards from outside is……”

System: “Ghost.”

Bai · doesn’t fear heaven, doesn’t fear earth · but fears ghosts · Weiwei: “……”

She turned her neck and glanced to the side, only to find a rotten hand suddenly grip the edge of the coffin.

Those rotten mushy fingers had long, black, dirty fingernails, with some small worms and insects wriggling in them.

…… Talk about an unsanitary hand.

The fingers scratched at the coffin’s boards. It seemed to be struggling to climb up.

Bai Weiwei opened her mouth and was about to call for help.

When a head full of hair appeared from above the coffin.

A miserable, disfigured pasty face, half decayed and filled with pus. Several maggots squirmed in the hollow of her eyes, and when she opened her mouth, it emitted an unparalleled stench.

“Oh, oh, I found you.”

Bai Weiwei: “……”

She knocked silently on the system.”Can I scream?”

The system checked outside. “Best not, a heap of them just woke up outside. Unless you’re worried that they can’t find you.”

Heap……

Heap!

Bai Weiwei was silent for a while. While shivering, she said: “So the target of this mission, is this ghost?”

System: “…… No.”

The host was scared silly, what to do?

The female ghost with blood and pus on her face, sprawled out on top of the coffin, and reached out to touch Bai Weiwei.

“What a good piece of meat, ah.”

Bai Weiwei shuddered, “Don’t come any closer!”

The system was pleased that the host was normal for a moment.

“You haven’t bathed for so many years, and tipped trough3, your meat stinks! Why didn’t you keep yourself fresh?”

System: “……”

Female ghost: “……”

The scene was very awkward for a second.

1: 大字报: Big posters and small posters are propaganda tools popular in China from the 1950s to the late early 1980s. The big print is a written form that is open and widely publicized to the public. The little print is to expose behaviors to certain important people.

2: 惨绿: Network term meaning unfortunate. So internet slang for an unfortunate.

3: 卧槽, Same homophone for Wo Cao(Fuck me) as in Arc 7, but I figured tipped trough sounds better than laid trough. It has alliteration at least, so it shouldn’t be any worse than something like “jumping jackhammers” as far as interjections go.

Hali: First time translating a real chapter, my neck hurts from looking at my computer for too long. Thank you, Piper and Vannie, hearts.

Vannie: @Hali, what are you thanking me for? I didn’t edit that much in this chapter, GOOD JOB! Back to this chapter: I had a good time thinking that finally something could make our MC a bit like this mortal being, but RIP. She was just disgusted!

TheWhiteBook: Great work Hali, while I was looking through to make sure our terms would stay consistent, I went and cleaned up some of it, Hope you don’t mind. And it can’t be helped Vannie, the emotional shielding blocks off a lot of fear too.

  1. The reality interlude hint for this Arc was:
“In the end, he was left with just a fragment of his soul. This unreconciled OBSESSION was the purest unadulterated love.”

Obsession being a concept deeply tied into chinese ghost lore and mythology.

Also, while astute readers might notice traces of similarities between this and the last Arc’s male leads, I want to take a moment to assure everyone that no feet were admired in the translating of this Arc.

  2. I think “fuck me” would’ve fit better than “tipped trough” since it isn’t as common an interjection and just reads like an error.

    1. But, it doesn’t say “Wo Cao” {我[I]操[fuck]}, it says “Wo Cao” {卧[laid]槽[trough]}.

Bai Weiwei, as a well to do young lady, doesn’t generally swear. In fact I don’t think she EVER swears. But, other characters do. And if I translate her as using profanity when she doesn’t it takes away some of the distinguishing characteristics the author put into her and the other character’s voices.

That would be doing a disservice to the work as a whole, in my opinion.

It would be easy if it were something like “damn you” I could use “dam ewe”, but “fuck” stands alone as an island without homophones, so just translating as is and making sure everyone knows what’s going on was the best compromise I could come up with.

  3. Truth to be told, I would have reacted the same way. The ghost doesn’t need to kill me, I would’ve died of disgust first.
